Word recognition encompasses all mental activity from perceiving a word to identifying its lexical representation as found in the mental lexicon. Using an electrophysiological (EEG) study, the ‘what’, ‘when’, ‘where’, and ‘how’ can be revealed in visual word recognition. In lexical decision tasks, letter strings are presented and participants decide whether the letter strings are words or not, while response latencies and accuracy are measured.
