Languages in Contact

Languages can come into direct or indirect contact with one another; it would certainly be difficult to find entirely isolated languages or language varieties in the world today. Hungarian and English can come into direct contact in countries where English is the dominant language and Hungarian communities reside. The Hungarian language within Hungary can be indirectly influenced by English. This presentation will outline a contact linguistics research project that examines how the Hungarian language used by the Hungarian minority in Australia functions when situated far from its traditional environment in Central Europe, where another language, Australian English, is dominant.
