The presentation is divided into three distinct parts. Firstly, we will discuss current research concerning pharmaceutical residues found in surface waters, the pathways and potential fate of these new types of pollutants, as well as detection possibilities, analytical challenges, and the current state of science. This will be concluded by a third part which places the topic within the current European Union regulatory environment, presenting the legislative framework for the entry of micro-pollutants into surface waters and their reduction.
