Languages in Contact

Languages may come into direct or indirect contact with each other; it would certainly be difficult to find completely isolated languages or language varieties in the world. Hungarian and English may come into direct contact in countries where English is the dominant language and Hungarian communities live there. The Hungarian language in Hungary may be indirectly influenced by English. This presentation will present a contact linguistic research project that investigates how the Hungarian language used by the Hungarian minority in Australia functions far from its traditional environment in Central Europe, where another language, Australian English, is dominant.
