Word recognition includes all mental activity from the perception of the word to the identification of its lexical representation that is available in the mental lexicon. With an electrophysiological (EEG) study the ‘what’, ‘when’, ‘where’, and ‘how’ can be revealed in visual word recognition. In lexical decision tasks, letter strings are presented and participants decide whether the letter strings are words or not while response latencies and accuracy are measured.
