Languages in Contact
Languages may come into direct or indirect contact with each other; it would certainly be difficult to find completely isolated languages or language varieties in the world. Hungarian and English may come into direct contact in countries where English is the dominant language and Hungarian communities live there. The Hungarian language in Hungary may be indirectly influenced by English. This presentation will present a contact linguistic research project that investigates how the Hungarian language used by the Hungarian minority in Australia functions far from its traditional environment in Central Europe, where another language, Australian English, is dominant. Recommended for secondary students.
Multiculturalism in Australia
The lecture covers the most important aspects of Australia’s multicultural policies, which evolved from the need to address issues raised by the arrival in Australia of large numbers of migrants, many whose first language was not English. Among the most profound changes in Australia over the past century has been the evolution in public policy from the White Australia Policy to a non-discriminatory immigration policy, with the parallel transition from assimilation to integration and then to multiculturalism. Recommended for secondary students.

American Exceptionalism: Nation-building Myths
Each nation (and individual) is “unique” and “exceptional.” This presentation briefly focuses on the specifically (U.S.-)”American” ingredients of uniqueness from nation-building stories to the religious, political and economic aspects of exceptionalism. Recommended for secondary students.
The Myth of the Melting Pot
What are the origins of the “melting pot” concept? By today’s standards, it is frequently regarded to be too intolerant and incompatible with multiculturalist expectations. However, the melting pot could actually be seen as a(n uneasy) compromise with respect to nation-building recipes when examined in the broader historical context of assimilation/integration-oriented expectations. Recommended for secondary students.
The dark side of the music industry: lyrics of metal, rock, punk, post-punk songs
Most trends and genres in popular music getting to be shaped in the 1960s were seen as part of a countercultural movement, and as rebels against traditional forms of musical entertainment both in terms of melody and lyrics. Heavy metal, hard rock, punk, and post-punk bands are typically labelled as angry young men, and the songs they compose and perform almost always convey ideas of nonconformism and they reject the mainstream mores of Western civilisation. Looking at a few examples we will identify and describe the issues, social and personal problems most frequently discussed in the song lyrics of the above mentioned dark music genres. Recommended for secondary students and adults.
Modern retellings of Shakespeare’s plays/ Shakespeare és a modern popkultúra
Although Shakespeare may be thought of today as an ancient author with little if anything to say to 21st-century people, the adaptations of his plays produced in the past couple of decades seem to contradict this opinion. In this presentation we’ll take a look at a few examples to see how what Shakespeare has to say gets to be translated in a popular rom com, a heavy metal concept album, and a musical. Recommended for secondary students and adults.
